The Dolomites in autumn had always been on my photography bucket list, and when the opportunity to join a photo workshop arose, I was beyond excited. Known for its towering peaks, misty valleys, and serene lakes, the Dolomites in the fall seemed like a magical realm waiting to be captured. Little did I know, however, just how breathtaking and unpredictable this adventure would be. Now that I am back from the Dolomites, I will share my experiences with you.

Arrival and First Impressions

Back from the Dolomites, I can confidently say the journey began with a rush. After dropping off our gear, we headed straight for our first location: a little lake. As we arrived at sunset, the lake was still, perfectly reflecting the peaks and surrounding pine forests on its mirror-like surface. The tranquil scene begged to be captured. I immediately launched my drone to capture the whole landscape from above, capturing a pristine view of the lake, with the fading sun casting a warm glow over the mountains.

A Cloudy Day at the Famous Tranquil Lake

The second day greeted us with an overcast sky that only grew darker as the day wore on. Photographers often crave clear skies or dramatic light, but we quickly adapted to the muted, diffused lighting the clouds provided. At this lake, the early morning stillness made the lake resemble a giant mirror, reflecting the towering cliffs and a few boats gently rocking at the shore. The misty mountains, mirrored in the lake, gave an otherworldly atmosphere, and despite the lack of golden light, there was beauty in this soft, moody ambiance.

Even with the mist, many photographers were already stationed by the shore and along the steep hillside, all vying for the best spots. Each click of the shutter felt like capturing a quiet memory, one I’ll hold close long after leaving these mist-laden peaks.

Mystical Views Amid Fog and Rain at the Mountain Pass

Rain poured steadily throughout our third day, with clouds hanging heavy over the landscape. Conditions were challenging - our cameras and gear often soaked, and visibility constantly shifting. Yet, in this misty shroud, we discovered scenes with a mystical charm. The mountain pass presented us with foggy, atmospheric landscapes that felt straight out of a dream. Occasionally, the peaks of the mountain emerged from the mist, only to disappear moments later, creating a mysterious dance of shapes and shadows.

Back from the Dolomites, I appreciate these eerie, fog-drenched moments more than ever. The mountain didn’t need sunshine to be magical. The fog added an ethereal quality to every shot, forcing us to focus on texture and shadow rather than dramatic light.

A Day of Pure Sunshine at the Top

By the fourth day, the forecast promised clearer weather, and we eagerly awaited a change. Sure enough, the sky began to open up, and the morning light touched everything with warmth and brilliance. We made our way to a little lake, where the early sunlight brought out the golden hues of autumn, and the entire scene felt alive. Our guide, Tamás, spotted the top of the mountain rising majestically from behind the lake with mystical clouds in the valley, and soon we were on our way to get closer to this iconic landscape.

As we ventured into the National Park, I felt a sense of awe I hadn’t felt before. The lake and settlements below were veiled in cloud cover, creating a beautiful contrast against the higher, sunlit peaks. The fog blanketing the valleys made it seem as if we were witnessing the mountains’ hidden spirit.

Back from the Dolomites, I’m struck by how this single day unfolded. The fog shifted continuously, sometimes blocking our view, then lifting just enough to reveal jagged peaks piercing through - a breathtaking, ever-changing spectacle. I flew my drone around the peaks, capturing panoramic shots that felt almost surreal, as if hovering above a mystical land.

An Unforgettable Sunset Over the Top of the Mountain

We decided to stay for the sunset, and as the light began to soften, we set up near the top. More mist rolled in, veiling everything in a moody, shifting light. It was a continuous cycle: the mist would clear, then close back in, and we would unpack, shoot, pack up, and repeat. Just when we thought the show was over, the mist would lift, allowing the pink hues of the setting sun to dance over the peaks. The shifting fog and light with the peaks emerging from the mist, like a sleeping Dragons' back, made this one of the most mesmerizing sunset I’d ever witnessed.

Back from the Dolomites, it’s the image of that final sunset that lingers. We all stood silently, capturing every fleeting moment, surrounded by others who were equally captivated by the scene. The mountain revealed itself and retreated, as if knowing we weren’t ready to leave.

Farewell at the Lake before Back from the Dolomites

Our last morning was spent back at the lake we went first, where we wrapped up our time in the Dolomites with a final, quiet shoot. We had been watching the weather for weeks, anxiously hoping for clear skies. In this part of the world, especially in fall and winter, weather patterns are notoriously unpredictable. Unfortunately, as the workshop began, the forecast wasn't in our favor: rain, clouds, and a promise of grim, overcast conditions. Despite this, we remained optimistic. Our mission was to capture Lady Aurora, but even the moody atmosphere of the fjords had its own charm.

As we set off, the rugged beauty of the region unfolded before us. The mountains, shrouded in mist and rain and a little snow on the top of them, resembled scenes from a Viking saga. The intermittent breaks in the clouds revealed stunning vistas that transformed under the soft glow of the ever-changing light. While Lady Aurora remained elusive for the first few days, the landscapes we photographed were nothing short of majestic. The moody, rain-kissed terrain offered a unique, almost mystical quality to the images, creating a sense of timelessness and awe.

The First Few Days: Clouds, Rain, and Stunning Landscapes

The initial days of the workshop were a photographer's dream in many ways, even if not in the way we had anticipated. The weather shifted between rain, sun, and clouds, giving us plenty of opportunity to capture dramatic landscape shots. The fjords reflected the fleeting moments of sunlight, and the mountain peaks, emerging from the clouds, created a mysterious ambiance.

Still, Lady Aurora remained hidden behind the thick cloud cover. Each night, we scanned the skies, hoping for a break. The landscapes we captured during this time were beautiful, yet the absence of the aurora left a lingering sense of anticipation. We reminded ourselves that patience was key. Even without the aurora, Norway’s scenery was a photographer’s paradise. The sense of adventure remained strong, and every moment spent in the wild northern landscapes was a gift in itself.

The Final Night: Lady Aurora's Grand Entrance

By the time our final night arrived, hope was beginning to dwindle. The weather forecasts gave little reason for optimism, with continued predictions of overcast skies. Yet, as we gathered around, my brother stepped outside, glanced upwards, and excitedly exclaimed, "Guys, the sky is starry!" At that moment, everything changed. The sky had cleared, and though we couldn’t yet see Lady Aurora with the naked eye, we knew she was out there, waiting.

Grabbing our cameras, we rushed to a spot with minimal light pollution, ready to capture whatever we could. At first, faint traces of light appeared on our screens. But soon, those faint glimmers turned into something far more spectacular. Lady Aurora began her dance, slowly at first, then building into a full, mesmerizing performance. Shades of green, purple, and red shimmered across the sky, twirling and undulating like a celestial ballerina. It was as if the heavens themselves had opened up just for us, and we stood in awe, our cameras clicking away in rapid succession.

Dragon's Back: Witnessing Lady Aurora's Full Splendor

We raced to a location we had scouted earlier, a rocky outcrop we affectionately called "Dragon’s Back," where the view over the fjord was unparalleled. Here, Lady Aurora gave us a show beyond our wildest expectations. The aurora danced exuberantly across the sky, shifting and swirling in vibrant hues of green, magenta, red and yellow. It was a breathtaking sight, unlike anything we had ever seen. The sky was alive, filled with color and movement, as though some ethereal being was performing a majestic ballet for an audience of stars.

The intensity of the aurora’s display left us speechless. Wave after wave of light danced overhead, growing in strength and beauty with each passing moment. Lady Aurora had truly graced us with her presence, and we captured every moment with reverence and wonder.

The Lookout: A Final, Unforgettable Dance of Lady Aurora

As the aurora seemed to quiet down, we decided to head to another vantage point, a lookout that offered sweeping views of the bay. Here, the reflection of Lady Aurora on the calm waters of the fjord added another layer of magic to the already otherworldly experience. The sky above and the water below seemed to merge into one, as Lady Aurora continued her mesmerizing dance, her colors flickering and swirling in perfect harmony with the stars.

When we finally returned to our accommodation, it was nearly 3 a.m., but none of us felt tired. The exhilaration of having witnessed such a spectacular display kept us wide awake, replaying the night’s events in our minds. Lady Aurora had not only met our expectations; she had far surpassed them. The joy and satisfaction we felt were indescribable. Even the long journey home felt effortless, as our thoughts were still filled with the magical dance we had just witnessed.
