Autumn landscape detail at sunset taken in the Dolomites in 2026.
There are moments in landscape photography when arriving a few minutes later would mean missing everything. Sacred Valley was one of them. I reached the famous viewpoint above Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes literally at the last moment. I managed to take only two photographs before the warm light illuminating the church disappeared, leaving the valley to the approaching shadows.
Yet it was not only the light that made this moment feel extraordinary. Rising behind the tiny church, the immense Odle peaks seemed like ancient guardians carved from stone—silent giants that have watched over this sacred place for centuries. Their towering walls embrace the valley, while the little church rests peacefully below, fragile in scale yet somehow protected by their enormous presence.
The last golden sunlight strengthened that feeling. It touched the highest ridges, flowed across the autumn forest, and finally found the church below, as though the mountains themselves were allowing one final ray of light to reach the sanctuary before nightfall.
For me, Sacred Valley is a photograph about protection and timelessness. The church may have been built by human hands, but around it stands a cathedral far older and greater—the Dolomites themselves, keeping their eternal watch over the valley and the sacred place entrusted to their care.
